Check out this new CD by Albuquerque-based young lion John Maestas and Humoso, consisting of: John Maestas - Guitar/Vocals Enrique "Peru" Chavez - Drums Aaron Lovato - Saxophonista Asher Barrera s- Bass/Vocals As a seasoned musician who has been in this business for over 35 years, I find thefact that the band is so young both amazing and truly inspiring. To be able to develop and identifiable “band sound” is what all bands strive for in their careers and Humoso has already attained that in this first recording. Each musician has their own unique sound, and the improvisational ideas that flow so naturally from each player along with the cohesion of the group set Humoso apart from most bands. The instrumentation of guitar, bass, tenor sax and percussion (and the renowned pianist John Rangel playing Fender Rhodes on Under The Mango Tree) captures the attention of the listener and holds it all the way through the album. That is no easy feat, and is a key element that makes Humoso’s music so impressive. They have the “total package” so to speak, which is increasingly rare these days. They are a truly original group of musicians, making original music that inspires you to listen, smile and dance. -Doug Lawrence To purchase this CD: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/johnmaestas Susan Abod ![]()

"The Three Faces of Jazz is a "crown jewel" in the New Mexico jazz scene, and this long-awaited CD is a swinging and sensitive testament to their talents and abilities. The special guests make it even better. It's all well played, well recorded and well worth the wait."As a follow up to my brief liner notes on the new CD by the Three Faces of Jazz and the El Meson All Stars, I’m happy to see that it’s out and certainly lived up to its promise. When I first heard the CD months ago, several of the horn parts had not been added, and the addition of Dave Anderson, Arlen Asher and Chief Sanchez makes the entire project sparkle. Plus, several of my very favorite jazz tunes are among the 15 cuts (thanks, guys!), including “Footprints”, “Angel Eyes”, “Sunshower”, and “Dolphin Dance”. The CD is also a delight to see with original cover art work by Pamela Faye, and wonderful photos of all the cats. But the important thing is that the music swings, and as co-leader and music director Bryan Lewis recently told me in no uncertain terms, “If you’re not going to swing, stay home!” Michael Handler Jazz Host KSFR-FM. ![]() Tribute Trio with John Rangel: John Rangel - piano, Michael Glynn - bass, Cal Haines - drumsBE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE TRIBUTE TRIO’S COMPREHENSIVE WEBSITE: www.tributetrio.com for information about the trio musicians, the featured composers and the upcoming schedule of concerts! ![]() The Tribute Trio's debut CD " Dedications" is available from their website: www.tributetrio.com Here’s a review of the CD by Mel Minter from the current April 28-May 4, 2011 ALIBI: “In a just-completed yearlong series, the Santa Fe/Albuquerque-based Tribute Trio — John Rangel (piano), Michael Glynn (bass) and Cal Haines (drums) -- presented 12 monthly concerts, each focused on a different jazz pianist/composer. On “Dedications”, they use the insight gained as inspiration for nine original and compelling compositions, delivered with dazzling musicianship and a hand-in-glove responsiveness established over months of collaboration. While the tunes may be inspired by jazz masters, the trio has established a sophisticated voice of its own that invites, and will bear, repeated listening. From finger-popping blues to serpentine songs to impressionistic ballads, “Dedications” is a top-drawer, soul-satisfying experience.” Contact Person for Tribute Trio: Victoria Rogers, Artistic Director 505.989.1088 / victoria@tributetrio.com
