Straight Up
Michael Anthony - Guitar
Michael Olivola – Bass,
John Trentacosta - Drums
With special guest, Matt Brewer
Matt was born April 20, 1983, in Oklahoma City but spent most of his youth in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born into a musical family, Matt was surrounded by music from an early age, both his father and grandfather being jazz musicians, and his mother being an avid music lover. He started playing drums at age 3, learning rudiments on a small practice pad, but didn't take music seriously until the age of ten, when he found the bass during a summer program at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. There he began studying classical bass from two world renowned bass instructors, Winston Budrow, and Lawrence Hurst, while learning about jazz from his father. Matt started gigging professionally at the age of twelve around the Albuquerque area and was soon winning awards from the top university jazz festivals, twice winning the Outstanding Jazz Performer award which had never before been awarded to a middle school student. He continued his study of classical bass with the superb principal bassist of the New Mexico Symphony, Jean-Luc Matton, but soon realized that it would be necessary to be in an overall more creative and art appreciating environment. This led to the decision to attend the Interlochen Arts Academy. Matt continued his study of classical bass, and took jazz performance classes. During his junior and senior years, Matt was selcted from applicants all across the country, to participate in the Grammy Band. He then performed on the 2000 Grammy Awards telecast in a group that was the first ever to perform on the show without being nominated for a Grammy. Also during his senior year he was invited to participate in the Vail Jazz All-Stars program uner the direction of Bassist John Clayton. This was Matt's first experience with a jazz bass teacher. After graduating the Interlochen Arts Academy, Matt attended the inagural class of The Juilliard Jazz Program and studied with bassists Rodney Whitaker and Ben Wolfe. After spending two years at Juilliard he decided to leave school to make time for his busy touring schedule. He has worked with artists such as, Greg Osby, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Greg Tardy, Chris Cheek, Mark Turner, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and many others. He has had extensive touring and teaching experience across The United States, Europe, Canada, the Middle East, and Japan. He is featured on Greg Osby's current Blue Note release “Channel Three”.

(next performance - Jan. 30th)
Diego Arencon Trio - featuring John Rangel and Luis Guerra. This world class energetic jazz trio delivers a blend of Originals and Jazz standards from the heart. For many years, Leader-Percussionist Diego Arencon has been a central figure in the growth of New Mexico's jazz community, bringing boundless creativity and energy to the grooves. Diego is rooted in the great jazz traditions of Art Blakey and Elvin Jones but also influenced by Brian Blade and Eric Harlan.
Pianist/Composer John Rangel, a native New Yorker who moved to Santa Fe four years ago, adds a depth
and virtuosity to the piano chair. He brings a large portion of the original material with a wide range of expression to the group. John, with his many influences has sculpted a deeply personal voice in the jazz idiom. Bassist Luis Guerra has established himself as one of the top music producers in New Mexico. His energetic style on the bass, fueled with his expertise in latin
and jazz rhythms always makes for a dynamic and exciting performance. While the interplay and beauty of this group is reminiscent of the great jazz trios, their unique voice has firmly established them on the world stage.

Together with Mark Clark, an exceptional drummer with a lengthy star- studded resume, they lay down a modern, energetic and soulful foundation to "Rush Street." Tenor

Excerpt from a letter sent to J.R. Palermo, owner of Tiny's:
Dear Mr. Palermo,
I have been attending the outstanding jazz performances at
Tiny's on Wednesday nights. These are performances the likes
of which Santa Fe has not seen in my nine years in the city.
These are excellent
shows by such world-class musicians as
Chief Sanchez and Richie Cole. They are accompanied
by
and attract the best of the best due to their high caliber.
This lends itself to institutional support and promotion. I, for one, will be supporting these great musicians in their performances and professionalism in an art that has not been experienced before in Santa Fe, or the state of New Mexico.
Thank you for bringing these artists to your venue and making
them available to the public. Santa Fe is indeed privileged to
see events like these performed on special tour occasionally,
but to have the privilege of seeing them once a week at
Tiny's is divine.
Thank you again.

Cal Haines and The 4th Friday Trio, featuring John Rangel (piano), Michael Glynn (bass) and
Cal Haines (drums)
will be playing at Scalo Italian Grill in Albuquerque on every 4th Friday of the month, from 8:30 – 11:30. Next performance will be on March 26th, with a tribute to Bobby Timmons.
Bobby Timmons studied piano from the age of six. After moving to New York in 1954 he played bop with Kenny Dorham's Jazz Prophets (1956), Chet Baker, Sonny Stitt, and Maynard Ferguson.
While a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, with whom he toured Europe, he became well known for his composition Moanin', a funky, gospel-oriented tune. From 1959 to 1960 Timmons worked with Cannonball Adderley and recorded two further soul-jazz compositions that became hits, This Here (also called Dis Here) and Dat Dere.
He rejoined Blakey briefly in 1960, but thereafter his career declined rapidly because of alcoholism, possibly brought on by artistic frustration. Timmons was a sophisticated and versatile pianist, but he became stereotyped and inhibited by the success of his simple compositions.
Nature abhors a vacuum, as the maxim says, and so apparently does the stage at Scalo Il Bar. Every Friday
night for several years now, you could depend on finding pianist Stu MacAskie’s trio, with bassist Michael Glynn and drummer Cal Haines, swinging away, house band to
the bubbling conviviality. With MacAskie’s departure for points Far East last month, several jazz groups have been sucked into the void he left and will rotate through on
Friday nights.
“Stu was absolutely wonderful and did a great job for us,” says Ben Williams, the bar’s music director. “Upon his departure, we decided to take the opportunity to
showcase different artists.”
One band, at least, has nailed down a regular gig there,
as
its name announces: Cal Haines and the 4th Friday Trio, which features Haines, Glynn and pianist John Rangel.
“It’s a real honor and a real treat to play with John,” says Haines. “He’s so exciting to play with—so demanding, and yet so giving. It’s a beautiful place to be in.”
Rangel returns the compliment. “They’re both terrific musicians. Cal’s so fun, such a die-hard swinger,” he says.
Rangel has come up with a concept that promises to make their appearances more intriguing than the run-of-the-mill gig: Each month they’ll pay tribute to a major jazz pianist. “We wanted to do something a little different,” says
Rangel. “There are all these different piano players that
a lot of young people don’t listen to because they’re listening to the modern guys,” he says. “They’re worth checking out.”
